Ariel Henry resigns as Prime Minister of Haiti
The writing seemed to be on the wall for Haiti’s Prime Minister (and caretaker president) Ariel Henry, as armed groups took over strategic areas of the country’s capital Port-au-Prince last week, preventing him from setting foot back in his home country as he returned from an international tour aimed at salvaging his crumbling administration.
- Mr. Henry has now announced his resignation, which will take effect as soon as a presidential council is set up to replace him.
👉 Why it happened. Mr. Henry appealed to the international community, requesting foreign intervention to back his weak government from the surge in gang violence. He came close to securing a controversial mission from Kenyan police to try restoring order in Haiti...
