Ecuador scoffs at international law with raid on Mexican embassy
Ecuador’s decision to storm Mexico’s embassy in Quito to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas was extremely uncommon, even for Latin America’s weak institutional standards.
- Ecuador’s actions were repudiated by heads of state across the political spectrum, while Mexican President Andrés Manuel “AMLO” López Obrador immediately severed diplomatic ties with Quito.
- On Wednesday, the Organization of American States (OAS) approved a resolution condemning the incursion, which took place on the night of April 5.
👉 Why it matters. The unauthorized raid on Mexico’s office breaches a core principle of international law: that of diplomatic immunity. This includes the inviolability of foreign missions, as ratified by the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
