Police arrest masterminds of Marielle Franco murder
Brazilian police on Sunday arrested three men they say were the masterminds behind the 2018 murder of Marielle Franco, who served as a Rio de Janeiro city councilor. All three were public figures: a federal lawmaker, a former police chief, and a state court member.
The accused. Chiquinho and Domingos BrazĂŁo, two former Rio de Janeiro city councilors, are singled out as the men who ordered the hit on Ms. Franco. Chiquinho currently serves as a congressman, while Domingos is a member of Rio’s state accounts court, a public spending watchdog.
- Marshals also arrested Rivaldo Barbosa, a former Rio police chief. He initially oversaw the Marielle Franco investigation.
- He is accused of helping to plan the assassination, promising impunity to the BrazĂŁo brothers, and deliberately sabotaging the investigation.
