Deaths pile up in Recife after massive rains
The government of Pernambuco declared a state of emergency after massive rainfall hit the metropolitan area of state capital Recife. At least 84 people died as a result of rains which have been chastising the region for almost a week now — causing floods and mudslides. Another 4,000 have been displaced and dozens more remain missing.
- Classes in schools serving almost 100,000 have been suspended at least for today.
