“It’s time to say enough”
President Jair Bolsonaro hosted dozens of foreign diplomats on Monday to once again lambast Brazil’s electronic voting system. By claiming the existence of security vulnerabilities in voting machines — which authorities have repeatedly debunked — the president continues to lay the groundwork to question electoral results in October, should he lose to former President Lula.
- In a slide show presentation laden with spelling and grammar errors, the president once again made the case to reinstate printed ballots in Brazil.
- “An electronic system cannot give 100 percent guarantee of security (for voters),” Mr. Bolsonaro said. Unsurprisingly, he showed no evidence of how the electronic voting system can be rigged.
Why it matters. Jair Bolsonaro is consistently ramping up his local version of the “Big Lie,” a falsehood peddled by Donald Trump that the 2020 U.S. election was stolen.
