A dictatorship apologist rivals Milei from within in Argentina
Javier Milei’s list of enemies is growing fast, as the president of Argentina says anyone standing in the way of his reforms is part of the country’s “political caste.” Even his vice president, Victoria Villarruel, might be on it now.
👉 Why it matters. Ms. Villarruel is not just any vice president, but one of the most important right-wing activists in the country, as well as a foe of Argentina’s human rights groups, who describe her as an apologist of the country’s murderous 1976-1983 military dictatorship.
Dictatorship. She was born in a military family with members accused of crimes against humanity, and spent most of her adult life trying to re-shape public discussion around the 1970s, focusing on crimes committed by left-wing guerrillas over those of the country’s Armed Forces.
