D-Day approaches for Chile’s new constitution
Next Sunday, September 4, Chileans will decide in a national referendum whether the country’s new constitutional draft should replace the present charter, which dates from the Pinochet era and fails to guarantee the public healthcare and education protections citizens have recently urged for.
The journey. The new charter is a response to nationwide protests which erupted in 2019 against inequality and the inadequacy of the country’s public health, education, and pension systems. The government called for a constitutional referendum, and 78 percent of Chileans voted in favor of changing the constitution.
