Overwhelmed private hospitals are trying to transfer their Covid-19 patients to public health facilities, says João Gabbardo, head of São Paulo’s coronavirus crisis committee.
On Twitter, Mr. Gabbardo said “private hospitals in the city of São Paulo are asking the public health system to hospitalize patients who have health insurance. The virus does not choose patients according to their social status.” His warning comes as the state registered a daily record of 679 deaths on Tuesday.
He did not mention which hospitals sought to transfer patients. However, a recent survey of 93 private hospitals carried out by the São Paulo HMO association (Sindhosp) shows that nearly all facilities are receiving more Covid-19 patients. And 55 percent of hospitals noted that more and more severe and rapidly worsening cases are appearing.
Also, by March 12, ICU occupation topped 90 percent in 72 percent of these hospitals.
