Brazil’s National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS) published a new ordinance forcing healthcare insurance providers to cover the costs of rapid Covid-19 tests, providing patients have a doctor’s prescription to take them.

The decision comes as testing has become increasingly more expensive due to a massive increase in demand and an imminent shortage in stocks. ANS chair Paulo Rebello Filho said the decision could make rapid tests more accessible, which is crucial to control the rapid spread of the Omicron coronavirus virus.

For the past two days, Brazil has obliterated its records for new daily cases, and the seven-day average of infections is just short of 100,000 per day.
