The Brazilian Congress will vote to allow the federal government to increase the Covid-19 budget by BRL 343.6 billion. According to Brazilian fiscal responsibility laws, the government cannot increase public spending without approval from lawmakers.

The money will be distributed to cabinet ministries as well as state and municipal governments. The lion’s share will go to the Economy Ministry (BRL 228.9 billion), while states and municipalities will share BRL 403.2 million among themselves. With the additional funds, administrations can pay employment benefits — such as medical and dental assistance — debts, and other obligations.
