The Papuda prison complex, in the outskirts of Brasilia, reported 38 Covid-19 cases within its facilities — an increase of 14 cases over the past 24 hours. Of those, 20 are inmates and 18 are penitentiary agents. None of the cases are considered to be serious. Since the beginning of the pandemic, São Paulo prisons have taken different measures to contain the spread of the novel virus. Visits were suspended, and 14-day mandatory quarantine for new inmates and social isolation of older inmates have been established.

No area is potentially more favorable for the widespread transmission of the novel coronavirus as a Brazilian prison — once described by a former Justice Minister as “dungeons,” after he said he would rather die than spend a night in a Brazilian cell.
