Haiti intervention proposal sparks skepticism at the UN
The UN Security Council on October 21 unanimously passed a sanctions package against top gang leaders in Haiti, a country that has been crushed by a social, economic, and security crisis amid rising food and energy costs and the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021.
- A second draft resolution discusses the possibility of a new internationally-backed armed intervention in the country, which has raised eyebrows among key players at the council, including China and Russia (both hold veto power).
Sanctions. According to the UN, the new restrictions — which include asset freezes, travel bans, and arm embargoes — target gang leaders “and those who finance them,” in the hope of “easing months of violence and lawlessness which have fuelled a major humanitarian crisis.”
