Brazil lags in AI regulation, but there are opportunities to be seized

Despite being a pioneer in starting discussions around ground rules for AI, the Brazilian Congress has since slept on the issue.

Brazil is the international market with the highest growth potential for artificial intelligence, according to a report from consulting firm GlobalData. By 2027, generative AI in Brazil is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 100 percent, with India coming in second at 97 percent.

Not surprisingly, the technology is already being used in various sectors in Brazil. For example, according to the Center for Judicial Innovation, Administration, and Research at think tank Fundação Getulio Vargas, more than half of Brazilian courts use AI tools. These tools help manage the overwhelming backlog of legal cases by structuring data, categorizing information, and automating tasks.

Brazil was one of the first countries to discuss the regulation of AI. The country’s early involvement in the field preceded the European Union, as the lower house of the Brazilian Congress began considering proposals to establish rules and parameters for this emerging technology as early as 2020.
