Brazil to be first to produce green hydrogen from ethanol

A partnership between Shell and USP will test renewable hydrogen on buses within the university's campus in São Paulo

A partnership between Shell, the University of São Paulo (USP), Hytron, and the Center for Chemical and Textile Industry Technology of the National Service for Industrial Apprenticeship (SENAI CETIQT) will test the production of renewable hydrogen from ethanol.

The project will assess the feasibility of producing fuel from two units within Cidade Universitária, the main campus of USP, located in the western zone of São Paulo city. The hydrogen produced will be used to fuel three circular buses that operate within the university, and one Toyota vehicle. Testing will determine whether hydrogen is a low-carbon solution for heavy transportation, including trucks and buses.

The project is expected to start operations in 2023, with a total investment of BRL 50 million, funded through the research, development, and innovation (PD&I) clause of Brazil’s National Oil Agency.

The technology is based on a biofuel provided by Raízen and will be developed and manufactured by Hytron. The SENAI CETIQT Biosynthetics and Fibers Innovation Institute will provide support for the Shell Brazil funded project.
