Five-time world champions Brazil kick off their 2022 World Cup campaign this afternoon in Lusail, Qatar, squaring off against Serbia in Group G. It will be the last match of the group stage’s opening round. In the almost 100-year history of the tournament, Brazil is undoubtedly the most storied side in World Cup history — and not just because they’ve won it more than anyone else.
The ever-presents
Not only has Brazil won more World Cup titles than anyone else, the country has also participated in more editions of international football’s top tournament than any nation. To be more precise, Brazil is the only country that has taken part in every World Cup since the inaugural tournament in Uruguay in 1950.
Brazil’s closest rival in this regard is Germany, which — either as West or East Germany — has only missed out on World Cups in 1930 and 1950. They were not invited to the former, and Germany had not yet been readmitted to FIFA by the time of the 1950 tournament in Brazil.
