As Brasília struggles to beat Covid, governor holds a 50th birthday bash

Federal District Governor Ibaneis Rocha organized a lavish birthday party this weekend, with no signs of mask use or social distancing. Six guests were arrested after a disturbance at a nearby hotel

Citizens in Brazil’s Federal District, home to capital city Brasília, enjoy the country’s highest per capita income and human development index. Yet, the capital ranks 16th out of 27 states regarding coronavirus vaccination. While São Paulo is giving jabs to citizens in their mid-30s and the Amazonian city of Manaus is inoculating people aged 20 and above, the capital has only now allowed residents between 41 and 59 to schedule vaccination appointments.

Even so, Federal District Governor Ibaneis Rocha has done little to improve the vaccination situation in his state — besides cutting the interval between AstraZeneca doses down to 60 days — and on a personal level, he has blatantly disregarded sanitary measures laid down by the World Health Organization.
