Crucial gas pipeline brings relief to troubled Argentinian government
Argentina’s Peronist government found respite this week after a turbulent term marked by internal quarrels and rising inflation, inaugurating a crucial pipeline that connects Buenos Aires to the massive Vaca Muerta gas fields in the western Neuquén province, home to the second-largest shale gas deposits in the world.
Crisis. The news comes one year after the Alberto Fernández administration was put on the ropes by an energy crisis that contributed to the depletion of its international currency reserves, as the country spent billions shipping liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports to keep up with demand.
Solution. The pipeline could save USD 4 billion per year in imports, according to government estimates, while its construction only demanded a one-time USD 2.7 billion investment.
