Almagro survives as OAS head despite love affair
Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary General Luis Almagro has been at the heart of multiple political controversies, but his tenure seemed all but over due to non-political reasons last year, when a relationship with a female subordinate became public.
The case. The affair came to the light based on anonymous claims that Mr. Almagro had taken dozens of work trips with another OAS official, leading to internal probes to investigate a potential violation of the organization’s code of ethics, which bans “relationships that could interfere in work performance or harm others in the work environment.”
The verdict. In November 2022, the OAS voted to launch an independent probe into the allegations, as Mr. Almagro downplayed the case and said he supported a transparent probe.
