Is Bolsonaro about to be detained?
The New York Times on Monday published surveillance footage from the Hungarian embassy in Brasília, showing that former President Jair Bolsonaro stayed there for two nights during this year’s Carnival holiday.
- He “checked in” on February 12, just four days after the Federal Police raided addresses associated with him and seized his passport as part of an investigation into a coup plot to keep Mr. Bolsonaro in power despite losing the 2022 election.
What it looks like. The embassy is outside Brazil’s legal jurisdiction. Mr. Bolsonaro spending two days holed up in one after investigators zeroed in on him looks like he was trying to escape pretrial detention. Passport seizures are, after all, an ominous step for people under investigation.
