Bolsonarism reaches the U.S. Congress
U.S. Congressman Chris Smith, a Republican from New Jersey, held a press conference outside the Capitol on Tuesday with a delegation of far-right Brazilian lawmakers who support former President Jair Bolsonaro — and promised to chair a public hearing in the U.S. House in the coming weeks to denounce “human rights violations” in Brazil.
- Mr. Smith is the chair of the House Subcommittee on Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations. A previous attempt to hold a hearing was blocked by Jim McGovern, a Democrat from Massachusetts.
- The hearing would feature Paulo Figueiredo, the grandson of a former Brazilian dictator and who is under investigation for inciting sedition.
