Census shows Brazil’s demographic boom is no more
The writing was already on the wall, but the 2022 census all but makes it official: Brazil’s demographic dividend is over, as the country faces its narrowest margins of population growth on record and a fertility bust.
Findings. The headcount puts Brazil’s population at just over 203 million, well below the most recent estimate of 214 million. It means that since the 2010 census, Brazil’s post a paltry 0.52 percent annual rate of demographic growth. It was the first time since the 1872 census that this rate dropped below 1 percent.
