EU move threatens Brazilian exports
The European Parliament on Wednesday passed a law forcing companies that want to export to the bloc to ensure that their products have not led to deforestation and forest degradation. Businesses will also have to verify that they comply with human rights regulations and that the rights of affected indigenous populations have been respected.
- The products covered by the new legislation are: cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soy, and timber. It also covers products that contain, are fed with, or are made using these commodities (such as leather, chocolate, or furniture).
