Lula celebrates International Women’s Day with policy package
On this International Women’s Day, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will announce a program of 25 measures to combat gender inequality. The package encompasses 19 cabinet ministries and three public banks.
- Among the measures to be announced today are a decree forcing government contractors to reserve 8 percent of their jobs for women who have been victims of violence, a special credit line for women entrepreneurs, the free distribution of menstrual pads by the public health system, and measures to combat gender-based violence.
- The highlight, however, is a bill that increases penalties for companies that continue to pay women less for doing the same work as their male counterparts.
