More autonomy for police forces?
The House Public Security Committee could today vote on a bill forcing governors to select police chiefs from a three-person list submitted by top-ranked officers. It would also create a two-year term during which the appointees cannot be fired without majority support from state legislatures.
Why it matters. The bill, if approved, will grant unparalleled autonomy to corporations that already function with little civilian oversight. Combined, Brazil’s 27 state police forces have more troops than any Latin American army.
Into the weeds. In 2019, lawmakers approved a motion to fast-track the bill — meaning that it doesn’t need to pass through a floor vote before heading to the Senate.
