100 years since the Copacabana Fort revolt
Last year, I participated in a debate on a French radio station about the state of Brazilian democracy. I voiced concerns about the politicization of the Armed Forces, and the host asked me when that process started. Some say that the trend picked up over the last decade, but many believe that process actually began a century ago, notably with the Tenentismo movement.
History. Tenentismo was a political-military movement of rebellion by young officers (mostly lieutenants) in the Brazilian Army in the 1920s. The first and perhaps most emblematic revolt was the 1922 insurrection at the Copacabana Fort, in Rio de Janeiro.
Context. The military was disgruntled with the election of Minas Gerais Governor Arthur Bernardes for president after fake letters bashing the army attributed to him were published in newspapers.
