Today and tomorrow, the presidents of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa will meet remotely for the 14th BRICS Summit, hosted by China. In the event’s keynote address last night, Chinese leader Xi Jinping took a dig at NATO — whose expansionism in Eastern Europe Beijing blames for the war in Ukraine.
- “Believing in the status of strength, expanding military alliances, and seeking one’s own security at the expense of other countries’ security will inevitably fall into a security dilemma,” he said.
Why it matters. The BRICS alliance has failed as an attempt to shift international relations, but this meeting comes at a time of heightened tensions. It will also be Vladimir Putin’s first multilateral event since his country invaded Ukraine.
