Brazilians’ data for sale on the dark web
Yet another massive data breach has occurred in Brazil. This time around, it involves an ad published on a dark web forum offering a database of 270 million Brazilians’ social security records for sale. The total certainly includes deceased individuals, as Brazil’s population currently stands at 211 million. According to cybersecurity-focused website Ciso Advisor, the database includes names, taxpayer IDs, email addresses, and physical addresses obtained from 57 government data sources.
- The hacker selling the data claims he breached Dataprev — which manages social security databases — in July 2020.
Why it matters. Cyberwarfare is the next frontier of war. The Brazilian government, however, has proven to be particularly aloof on the matter, showing a worrisome track record of poor handling of sensitive data.
