Bolsonaro and Moro fall out over Federal Police control
Merely a week after sacking his Health Minister amid the worst pandemic in a century, President Jair Bolsonaro could be losing yet another popular member of his cabinet: Justice Minister Sergio Moro, the former Operation Car Wash judge. While the relationship between the two has been tempestuous for months, it reportedly reached breaking point when Mr. Bolsonaro informed the minister of his decision to sack Federal Police Chief Maurício Valeixo, who was a trusted appointment of Mr. Moro’s.
Ultimatum. The Justice Minister reportedly issued his resignation — unless Mr. Valeixo were to stay put, or Mr. Moro were able to handpick his successor.
- The dismissal of Mr. Valeixo was published in today’s Federal Register, apparently blindsiding the Justice Minister. Mr. Moro is a firm believer in game theory, meaning that he knows he must be willing to carry out his threats — if he flinches, he will be demoralized.
