Two of Mexico’s most important figures have tested positive for Covid-19: President Andrés Manuel “AMLO” López Obrador, 67, and business mogul Carlos Slim, 80, the country’s richest man.

  • AMLO: Over the weekend, AMLO tweeted that he was “feeling well, with mild symptoms” and did not cancel a remote meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a shipment of 24 million doses of the Sputnik V vaccine. Mexico began its immunization effort on December 24 and has vaccinated over 629,000 people. Early last year, AMLO faced harsh criticism for ignoring social distancing measures and being pictured not wearing a face mask.
  • Slim: With a USD 60-billion net worth according to Forbes, the telecom tycoon has been showing a “favorable response to Covid-19 after a week of mild symptoms,” his son said on Twitter. Mr. Slim will turn 81 on January 28.
