Brazilian scientists will announce a potential breakthrough in the fight against Covid-19 today at the National Academy of Medicine. Horses injected with the Sars CoV-2 protein, responsible for the infection of human cells, developed neutralizing antibodies that were 20 to 50 times more potent against the coronavirus.

Jerson Lima, a researcher at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, told news portal G1 that “it was important to patent this in Brazil. Everything was developed here in Brazil and it is vital to ensure it is intellectually protected.”

The next step will be the approval of clinical studies and tests on humans, in order to ascertain the safety of this potential treatment for Covid-19. Dr. Lima has already contacted the National Health Surveillance agency and explained the potential of this discovery. Clinical tests could be carried out in partnership with D’Or Institute, which is leading the research on the AstraZeneca vaccine for Oxford University in Rio de Janeiro.
