The Foreign Affairs Ministry on Thursday announced the nomination of Sérgio França Danese to head Brazil’s mission to the United Nations in New York.
Mr. Danese is currently Brazil’s ambassador to Peru, and previously headed the embassies in Algeria, Argentina, and South Africa. He also served as the ministry’s secretary-general under Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira’s previous stint leading the ministry (2015-2016).
Mr. Danese is to replace ambassador Ronaldo Costa Filho, who presided over the Security Council back in July as part of Brazil’s current two-year term. Brazil will preside over the Council again in October 2023.
Mr. Danese’s appointment still needs confirmation from the Senate.
Lula has sought to pivot from Brazil’s diplomatic stances under Mr. Bolsonaro — from adopting a more critical approach to Israel to pulling the country out of an anti-abortion coalition. Under Mr. Bolsonaro, Brazil became more aligned with the U.S. and more distant from South American neighbors at the United Nations General Assembly, as The Brazilian Report has shown.
