The Brazilian Federal Police in Amazonas, which heads searches for British journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian indigenous expert Bruno Pereira — who went missing in a remote western Amazon region eight days ago — denied that the bodies of the two men have been found.

The information was revealed by journalist André Trigueiro on Monday morning, quoting Mr. Phillips’s wife Alessandra Sampaio.

“As previously mentioned, found biological evidence that is under analysis, as well as belongings of the disappeared men,” the Feds say in a statement. “As soon as new findings occur, the family and the press will be immediately informed.”

Indigenous group Univaja says the same, casting severe doubt over what has been found, if anything, and why the Phillips family was informed by the British Embassy. The confusion adds yet another layer of complications to an already tortuous search effort.
