China invited the Argentinian government to participate in the next summit of the BRICS, a group that also includes Brazil, Russia, India, and South Africa. The event is scheduled to take place between May 20 and 24.

Per Sabino Vaca Narvaja, the Argentinian ambassador to China, this “very important invitation” came directly from Chinese President Xi Jinping, who has enjoyed good relations with his Argentinian counterpart, the left-leaning Alberto Fernández. During a February visit to Beijing, Mr. Fernández confirmed that his country wishes to join the group one day.

Created over a decade ago as an instrument to change power imbalances between developed and undeveloped countries. The group lost its importance on the global stage — and the massive disparities in how member countries evolved over the years made the BRICS more of a “China & Co.” forum.
