Health authorities in Brasília are investigating whether a Covid-19 patient who arrived on Saturday from South Africa was contaminated with the Omicron coronavirus variant. The individual was on the same flight as another suspected Omicron case in São Paulo, of a man who arrived at Guarulhos International Airport.

According to Federal District health officials, the man is aged between 40 and 49 and has received three doses of a Covid-19 vaccine. He is asymptomatic and is currently isolated at home. Tests to identify the presence of the Omicron variant were carried out yesterday by the government’s own public laboratory.

“[The laboratory] has already begun analysis on the genetic sequencing of the sample, with the objective of verifying whether the variant is present. The exam takes four days to complete,” said the local government, in a statement.
