According to documents shared among officials within the state government of Rio de Janeiro, health officials have voiced their concerns about a “new wave of Covid infections,” caused by the spread of the highly-contagious Delta variant

State capital Rio de Janeiro has experienced the biggest surge of infections this year. “Everyone living in Rio has noticed the uptake in contagion,” said Mayor Eduardo Paes, adding that the city could reinforce restrictions if sanitary conditions worsen further.

The Delta variant is spreading faster in Rio than anywhere else in the country, accounting for nearly 60 percent of samples tested. Additionally, the city is running out of vaccines. Unless the federal government sends more doses, first-dose rollouts will be interrupted tomorrow.
