Brazilian Education Minister Milton Ribeiro declared that Brazil must reopen its schools as soon as possible, mentioning that fellow G20 countries did so even before coronavirus vaccines were available. He said the government will issue an ordinance next week with guidelines for states and municipalities to get students back in the classroom.

“About 80 percent of schoolteachers have received at least one dose of coronavirus vaccine,” he said. “By September, that rate will go up to 100 percent, and classes must return by August.”

Currently, 26 of Brazil’s 27 states have authorized private schools to resume in-person classes in a hybrid capacity — that is, classroom lessons combined with remote learning. But 18 states continue to postpone the return for public schools, attended by 80 percent of Brazilian children and teenagers.

The glaring gap between regions — and between public and private schools — is set to deepen Brazil’s inequality levels and will have long-lasting effects on affected generations.
