Governor João Doria announced new stricter restrictions in the state of São Paulo between March 15 and 30. With Covid-19 cases and deaths spiraling out of control, the new emergency measures will impose limits on essential services, including supermarkets, pharmacies, and gas stations.
The entire state has been in the most severe “red phase” of its reopening plan since March 3, with only essential services being allowed to operate. Now, the São Paulo government feels the need to take restrictions even further.
The decision happens amid a health system collapse in 32 municipalities in the state and one day after São Paulo recorded 517 Covid-19 deaths, an all-time record for a single day. According to São Paulo’s Health Secretary, the state’s hospital network is reporting three coronavirus admissions every two minutes. The state has recorded 2.1 million coronavirus cases and 62,500 confirmed deaths.
