The São Paulo microregions of Presidente Prudente and Barretos — home to one of the largest rodeo festivals in the world — will once again enforce tight restrictions to contain the spread of the coronavirus. The state government placed them in the “red phase” of its reopening plan, following a surge in intensive care unit occupancy rates.
The same has occurred in the regions of Bauru and Araraquara. The latter is now facing a collapse of its health system, with no vacant intensive care beds remaining.
In the “red phase,” only essential businesses are allowed to operate. Non-essential stores, bars, and restaurants are only allowed to function via delivery services. Meanwhile, the regions of Sorocaba and Franca saw improvements in their quarantine classifications, which shows just how unevenly the coronavirus has spread across Brazil’s most populous state.
