Citizenship Minister Onyx Lorenzoni announced this Thursday that the government will appeal a Supreme Court decision to pardon Brazilians who had their social security registrations suspended, allowing them to qualify for the government’s BRL 600 (USD 114) emergency salary benefit. Mr. Lorenzoni said the measure could open loopholes for fraud, adding that it could be dangerous as “every and all financial operation in the country is based on a person’s social security number.”

In recent weeks, long queues have formed in front of social security offices throughout the country by those looking to rectify their status.
