According to multiple reports, the Brazilian airline may file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S., leaving the company vulnerable to competitors' moves

Ryanair, one of Europe’s largest low-cost airlines, will hold a recruitment event to try and poach Brazilian pilots. The announcement, made by pilot recruitment manager Angelo Currao on LinkedIn, comes after reports that Gol, a giant in the Brazilian domestic aviation market, may file for bankruptcy protection in the U.S.

The Irish-based airline will hold a recruitment event in Rio de Janeiro on January 19, Mr. Currao said in a statement addressed specifically to Gol pilots.

In December, Gol hired Seabury Capital to “assist the company in a broad review of its capital structure, in order to raise financial resources for complying with its financial commitments, and to, in conjunction with Skyworks, pursue ongoing negotiations with aircraft lessors, with the aim of achieving a comprehensive consensual restructuring of fleet obligations.”

Gol has a gross debt of BRL 19.3 billion (USD 3.9 billion), according to its latest earnings report. The company’s results were heavily affected by the pandemic crisis, which grounded planes for months and caused debt to balloon. Airlines were able to defer many payments, but were forced to swallow interest rates that in some cases reached 100 percent.
