The U.S. government delivered a 3 million-dose vaccine shipment to Guatemala this week, in a combined effort between Washington D.C. and American Airlines. With this latest batch, a total of 4.5 million immunizers were donated to Guatemala in July.
According to the airline, it is time to “share the commitment to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.” Since U.S. President Joe Biden took office, the country promised to donate 55 million doses to developing countries, including Latin American nations where vaccination processes are still unequal.
Among Central American nations, Guatemala has one of the worst vaccination rates, unlike good outliers Costa Rica, Panama, and El Salvador. Just 1.7 percent of the Guatemalan population is fully vaccinated so far.
