Ilan Goldfajn becomes first Brazilian elected IDB president
Brazil has one of its own citizens at the helm of the Inter-American Development Bank for the first time. Ilan Goldfajn, a former central banker and current Western Hemisphere Department director at the International Monetary Fund, was elected to the post on Sunday.
The process. The election comes after the ousting of Mauricio Claver-Carone following a sexual misconduct case. Mr. Goldfajn had support from the U.S. and gained the backing of Argentina in the final stages of the election process, after that country’s candidate, Cecilia Todesca, dropped out.
- Curiously, Mr. Goldfajn’s main opposition came from Brazil, with the future government boycotting his name and pushing for the vote to be postponed. The maneuvers did not work, and Mr. Goldfajn will become the first Brazilian IDB president.
