Between Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, teachers and students at public schools in São Paulo state reported that a government app had appeared on their phones without their consent.

Context. The Minha Escola SP app was launched in 2018 by the previous government of Márcio França. It was designed to allow students, parents, and guardians to track information such as school report cards and recorded absences.

Why it matters. If confirmed, the act represents a significant violation of the country’s data protection law (LGPD), which has been in effect since September 2020.
