Mapping and starting the reforestation process of a large area in a matter of weeks, using a system up to 50 times faster than the traditional techniques.

That is more or less the idea behind French startup Morfo, which landed in Brazil at the beginning of this year, targeting projects in one of the most threatened biomes in the country, the Atlantic Forest — a biome that has only 12 percent of its native forest left, according to SOS Mata Atlântica.

“In the manual, traditional way, it takes one person a day to plant seedlings in an area of 0.5 to 1 hectare. With our drones, that number jumps to 50 hectares,” Gregory Maitre, CEO of Morfo in Brazil, tells The Brazilian Report

The startup operation can be divided into three phases. “The first is mapping the area to be reforested. We do this by capturing images and also collecting plant and soil samples. Then, we test these samples in the lab to find the best mix of native species, those most suitable for the location and, consequently, which have a better chance of thriving. Following this, there is a 36-month monitoring period to track vegetation growth...
