Feds charge ex-indigenous agency head in Dom and Bruno case

Brazil’s Federal Police have filed criminal charges against Marcelo Xavier, the former head of indigenous foundation Funai, for the crime of inaction regarding the murder of British journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian indigenous expert Bruno Pereira last year.

The feds decided that Mr. Xavier did not take sufficient action to address conflicts in the Vale do Javari indigenous land, where Messrs. Phillips and Pereira were murdered during a research trip in June 2022.
