Brazilian left will try to outdo Bolsonaro on the streets

Jair Bolsonaro recently drove scores of thousands of supporters to São Paulo. Now, the left wants to do the same — and call for the former president's arrest

A group of left-wing organizations and political parties have planned a series of nationwide demonstrations for March 23 to demand punishment for former members of Jair Bolsonaro’s government who plotted a coup to overthrow democracy.

Rud Rafael, leader of the Homeless Workers’ Movement (MTST), initially said in an interview that the demonstrations would call for Mr. Bolsonaro’s arrest. Organizers later backtracked to a call for “no amnesty” for the putschist leaders, rather than specifically naming the far-right former president or calling for people to go to jail.

The left-wing Socialism and Freedom Party (PSOL) said in a statement that the demonstrations would be held in “defense of democracy, no amnesty for the coup plotters, and an end to the genocide in Palestine,” as well as to remember the 60th anniversary of the 1964 right-wing military coup that installed a dictatorship which lasted 21 years — and of which Mr. Bolsonaro was always an enthusiastic supporter.

Representatives of the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) and the Workers’ Party were also present at the meeting that decided the march’s agenda, the party said.

“The organizations … stressed the importance of occupying the streets to press for the punishment of those involved in the coup,” the statement said.
