Lula unveils last cabinet nominees

The upcoming administration will have more women in top positions than any other — 11 of 37 cabinet members

President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Thursday announced the remaining 16 names of his 37-member cabinet, including Marina Silva as environment minister and Senator Simone Tebet for the Planning Ministry.

Lula also announced his whips for the upcoming legislature. Congressman José Guimarães will be his House whip; Senator Jaques Wagner will be his Senate whip and Senator Randolfe Rodrigues will be the next government’s whip in Congress.

  • Agricultural Development: Paulo Teixeira, Workers’ Party congressman
  • Agriculture: Carlos Fávaro, senator
  • Cities: Jader Filho, chairman of the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB) party in Pará
  • Communications: Juscelino Filho, União Brasil congressman
  • Environment: Marina Silva, former senator and environment minister, and congresswoman-elect for the Rede party 
  • Fisheries: André de Paula, Social Democratic Party (PSD) congressman
  • Indigenous Peoples: Sonia Guajajara, indigenous leader and congresswoman-elect for the Socialism and Freedom Party
  • Institutional Security Office: Gonçalves Dias, retired Army general
