Big Agro glosses over indirect suppliers in deforestation discussions

At a recent event in D.C., beef sector representatives failed to address how indirect suppliers often do not follow environmental regulations, contributing to increased deforestation in the Amazon

Participants at the “Solutions for Sustainable Food Systems in Brazil” event hosted by the Wilson Center and the Brazilian Association of Beef Exporters (ABIEC) on Tuesday in Washington D.C., were overly optimistic about the agribusiness sector’s commitment to deforestation. 

Indeed, Federal Prosecutor Daniel Azeredo went so far as to say that private companies were the reason why deforestation did not end up even worse under Jair Bolsonaro’s administration.

During the far-right government, Amazon deforestation surged to a 15-year high, with the destruction of an area the size of the state of Rio de Janeiro (45,600 square kilometers over four years.
