‘Fake News Bill’ pits Google against government
After being fast-tracked last week, the so-called “Fake News Bill” (which sets parameters for combating online misinformation) could go to a House floor vote as early as today. While the bill would still have to go to the Senate before leaving Congress, the proximity of the vote sparked angry reactions from Big Tech firms, namely Google.
- The company added a link on its home page to an article signed by its government relations director, exposing what it sees as the risks of the bill,
- Google told users, “The fake news bill could make your internet worse” — later changed to “The fake news bill could increase confusion about what is true or false in Brazil.”
