Massive rainfall leaves path of destruction in coastal São Paulo
Torrential rainfall along the São Paulo state coast caused floods and landslides in several areas, killing at least 48 people and displacing thousands. The death count could go up, with dozens still missing.
What’s happening. The Carnival holidays are particularly busy times for coastal regions. The beach cities of São Sebastião and Bertioga saw more rain on Saturday and Sunday than they had in the entirety of the two previous months. Indeed, the region saw the most rain ever recorded in a 24-hour period in Brazil.
